How to Set a Gopher Trap: Tips and Tricks

Hey everyone,

I’ve been dealing with a gopher problem in my garden for the past few weeks, and it’s really starting to take a toll on my plants. I’ve read that trapping is one of the most effective methods for controlling gopher populations, but I’m a bit nervous about setting the traps myself.

I’ve seen a few different types of traps online, and I’m unsure which one is best for my situation. Here are some specific discussion points I’d love your input on:

  1. Types of Traps: What types of gopher traps have you used? Any recommendations?
  2. Setting the Trap: What are the steps you take to properly set a gopher trap? Is there a specific technique that works best?
  3. Location: Where are the best spots to place the traps in my yard?
  4. Safety Tips: Any precautions I should take while setting the traps?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

I feel you, @EcoWarrior! Gophers can be such a pain. I’ve had success with the Victor gopher traps. They’re pretty easy to set. You can find them at most garden stores.

@MousePatrol, I agree! The Victor traps are solid. As for setting them, I usually dig a little to find the main tunnel and then set the trap inside. Just make sure to cover it well afterward so the gopher feels secure.

Thanks for the tip, @HomeHelperHank! How do you make sure you’re in the right spot? Do you have any signs to look for?

Look for fresh mounds of soil or areas where the grass is dying. If you see any of that, you’re likely near an active tunnel. Just dig a bit to confirm!

Hey folks, just to add—always remember to wear gloves when handling traps. You don’t want to transfer your scent to them. It can deter gophers from going near.

@HomeHelper, that’s a great point! Do you have any other safety tips in mind?

Yes, definitely wash your hands after handling traps and avoid touching your face! Also, be careful where you step — gopher traps can be quite effective, but you don’t want to accidentally step on one!

Exactly! Also, try not to set traps near where pets or kids play. Safety first!

Has anyone tried baiting the traps with anything? I’ve heard some people use carrots or peanut butter to lure them in.

@MousePatrol, I’ve tried using carrots, and they worked well for me. I just cut them into small pieces and placed them inside the trap. The gophers couldn’t resist!

Interesting! I’ve never thought of using carrots. I usually just set the traps without bait. But if it helps, I’m willing to give it a shot!

I think it’s worth trying with the bait, @HomeHelperHank. Sometimes, the scent can make all the difference.

Totally agree. I’ve seen more success when I used bait. Just be persistent. You may not catch them right away!

Thanks for all the advice, everyone! I feel a bit more prepared now. I’ll be getting traps this weekend!

Good luck, @EcoWarrior! Keep us posted on how it goes.

Can’t wait to hear your success stories, @EcoWarrior!
