How to Choose the Best Mouse Trap for You

Hey everyone!

I wanted to start this discussion because many of us have dealt with the pesky problem of mice in our homes at some point. Choosing the right mouse trap can make all the difference between a successful catch and a frustrating fail. There are several types of traps available - snap traps, electric traps, glue traps, and even humane catch-and-release traps.

Before deciding, it’s crucial to consider some factors: the level of infestation, safety around pets and kids, and the effectiveness of the trap type.

Hey @SkepticalSue! I’ve tried all sorts of traps, but I always go back to the classic snap traps. They’re quick and effective. My main issue with glue traps is that I feel they’re inhumane. What’s your take on that?

I totally get that, @SafePawsOnly! I find glue traps to be a bit cruel as well. Snap traps, when set properly, can be a humane option if you’re quick about it. Have you had any mishaps with snap traps?

I agree with you both! But I have a cat, so I can’t use snap traps at all. I prefer humane traps, and I’ve had a few catches with them. However, I’m still trying to find the best bait. Any suggestions?

I’ve had the best luck with peanut butter! It seems to attract mice more than anything else. Also, I noticed that placing the bait at the back of the trap increases the chances of a catch.

Great tip, @BugByte! I usually just use cheese, but it’s not very effective. Peanut butter sounds like a game changer.

That’s an interesting point, @BugByte! I’ve read that mice have a hard time resisting peanut butter. What about baiting with seeds? Have any of you tried that?

I actually tried sunflower seeds before, and it worked for me! But I had a better experience with a mixture of peanut butter and seeds. It’s like a double treat for them!

Sounds like a winning combo, @HomeHelperHank! I’ll have to give that a shot. But how do you set your traps? Any tips for placement?

For placement, I always put my traps along the walls where I see droppings. Mice usually run along the edges, so it’s a good way to catch them.

If you’re dealing with a bigger infestation, I’d recommend electric traps. They’re a bit pricier, but they’re super effective and pretty humane. I had a friend who swears by them!

Electric traps do sound effective, @DryDogDude! Are they safe to use in homes with pets, though?

That’s a good question, @SkepticalSue. I’d be worried about my dog getting too curious around those traps.

Has anyone tried using essential oils as a deterrent? I read that peppermint oil can help keep mice away. Not sure if it works, but it sounds less intrusive.a

I’ve heard about that too, @MousePatrol! It might be worth a shot as an added layer of prevention, but I wouldn’t rely on it alone.

I love the idea of essential oils! Even though I use humane traps, I’d love to prevent them from even entering the house.
