Do Rats Eat Coffee Grounds?

Hey, I heard rats can be a nuisance in the garden but my grandma used to tell me that sprinkling coffee grounds would keep them away. Is there any truth to this?

I rescue rats and from my experience, they tend to avoid coffee grounds. The smell might be too strong for them.

Spot on Rita. Rats have sensitive noses and coffee grounds can be an irritant.

I’ve always just composted my coffee grounds, never thought they could be a pest deterrent!

Composting coffee grounds is great, but you’re also unknowingly deterring pests, it’s a win-win!

I work on a farm and we use coffee grounds to enrich soil. Never seen rats around our grounds.

That’s reassuring for outdoor use, but I meant more for indoor pet enclosures.

Definitely a bad idea indoors. They might nibble out of curiosity, and it’s not worth the vet bill.

Not safe. Make sure to keep your pet rats away from coffee grounds, it’s toxic!

Caffeine can be lethal to rats. It stimulates their nervous system excessively, which could lead to seizures or death.

While caffeine’s bad for them, I doubt they’ll eat enough to harm themselves. Just observe for a while.

From a pest control view, coffee grounds aren’t a reliable deterrent for rats. They prefer protein-rich sources.

We should then maybe focus on securing food sources rather than relying on coffee grounds, right?

Yes, secure your trash first. Rats are more interested in what’s in our bins than the coffee.

What’s the best practice for using coffee grounds so as not to attract unwanted rodents?

Keep areas clean and grounds confined to compost bins. Properly sealed bins deter most pests.
