@UrbanFarmer That’s genius! I also add citrus peels to the mix - rats hate the triple threat of coffee, eggshells, AND citrus scents.
Found the perfect balance:
1" layer coffee grounds
Cover with 2" soil
Top with mulch
This prevents rat disturbances while letting grounds decompose properly.
Warning to pet owners: Even residual coffee smell on your hands can stress domestic rats. Always wash up before handling cages! @RatRescuePro has seen the scary consequences.
Does this work for potted plants? I sprinkled grounds on my balcony herb garden and noticed fewer rodent disturbances. Or was that just coincidence?
Study shows:
- Fresh grounds deter 70% of rats
- Effectiveness drops to 30% after 48hrs
- Best used near entry points
Combine with other methods for complete protection.
@CompostQueen Your layering method is perfect! I also save my used coffee filters - they make great biodegradable weed barriers that rats avoid.
