Hi everyone,
I’ve recently noticed yellow jackets going in and out of a small crack in the interior wall near one of our windows. We can hear faint buzzing at certain times of the day, which makes me think there’s a nest inside the wall cavity.
I’m honestly not sure how serious this is. I’m worried about safety, possible damage, and whether this is something that can get worse quickly. For anyone who’s dealt with this before:
-
How risky is it to leave it alone for now?
-
Can yellow jackets cause damage inside walls?
-
Is this ever a DIY situation, or always professional?
Would love to hear your experiences.
It’s not great. Yellow jackets inside walls can become aggressive fast, especially if they feel vibrations or noise nearby.
I had this happen in a rental years ago. The nest grew way faster than I expected, and suddenly they were showing up inside the house.
@GreenThumbGal111 If you’re hearing buzzing regularly, that usually means an active and growing nest. Waiting rarely makes it easier to deal with.
One big issue is access. Since the nest is inside the wall, spraying blindly can drive them into living spaces instead of killing the colony.
From what I learned, yellow jackets don’t damage wood like termites, but they can chew drywall and insulation to expand the nest.
I’d be careful about DIY. A neighbor tried sealing the hole first and ended up with yellow jackets coming through light fixtures.
@GarageLifeMike Same experience here. Once they’re established in a wall void, the problem usually escalates rather than stabilizes.
If anyone in the home has allergies, this is a serious situation. Even a single disturbed nest can result in multiple stings.
Honestly, wall nests are one of those cases where calling a professional early can save money and stress later. It’s rarely “minor” once you notice it.
