Which Is Better, DIY Rat Control or Professional Services?

Hey everyone!

I’m facing a rat problem in my attic and garage. At first, I tried DIY methods—snap traps, peppermint oil, and sealing cracks—but the rats keep coming back. Now I’m debating whether to hire a professional exterminator. The cost is holding me back, but I’m worried DIY isn’t enough for a stubborn infestation.

Background: Rats are nesting in insulation and chewing through wires. I’ve caught 3 with traps, but there’s still scratching at night. I don’t know if this is a small colony or a full-blown invasion.

DIY works if you act early! I used bucket traps and steel wool to seal entry points. Caught 7 rats in 2 weeks. Save your money unless it’s out of control.

@TrapMaster How did you find all their entry points? My attic has so many gaps!

Use a flashlight at dusk—look for grease marks or droppings near holes. Rats follow the same paths nightly!

Pros have thermal cameras to find nests you’d miss. Worth every penny if rats are in walls—DIY won’t stop babies from growing up.

@ExterminatorPro Do exterminators offer warranties if rats return?

Most do! My company gives a 6-month guarantee. They’ll retreat for free if pests come back.

Mix both! I hired a pro for inspection (100) and didthe trapping/sealing my self. Saved 500 vs. full service.

DIY fails if you don’t remove attractants. Clean up birdseed, fix leaks, and store trash in metal bins. No food = no rats!

Electronic traps like Rat Zapper are pricey but humane and effective. Killed 10 rats in my shed. No poison risks!

Avoid DIY poisons! My dog almost died eating a dead rat. Pros use secure bait stations kids/pets can’t open.

Pros found 20+ rats in my barn—I thought it was just 5! Their exclusion work (metal flashing + concrete) saved my crops long-term.

YouTube tutorials taught me to install owl boxes and use dry ice in burrows. Zero rats for 8 months!

I tried DIY rat control when I spotted droppings in the garage, set traps and used bait. It helped somewhat, but after two months rats were still showing up. That’s when I called a pro.

DIY is great for small problems (a few mice here and there). But when you’ve got rats breeding in walls or ceilings, professionals have the tools to dig in deeper.

@TrapStarterTina Same here, after the pro visited I found hidden entry points in the foundation I never spotted. That was the turning point for me.

I saved a ton by using bait stations and exclusion myself. It worked because I caught it early. So if you’re proactive and vigilant, DIY can work.

They inspect, find the nests, plug up entry points, and give follow-up. DIY often misses those steps.

If you’re busy and want peace of mind, paying a pro for rodent control might save you headaches later. It’s not just the rats, it’s the damage and ongoing checking you skip.

@DIYDarrell I’ve done DIY for awhile, and I will say: if you go DIY, pick good products and keep monitoring. But I ended up upgrading to pro service when DIY got too time consuming.
