What to Do If You Find a Silverfish in Your Bed

Hey everyone!

I recently had the unpleasant experience of finding a silverfish in my bed. For those who might not know, silverfish are small, wingless insects that are often found in dark, damp places. They can be quite unnerving, especially when they invade personal spaces like our beds!

I did some research, and it turns out that silverfish can be attracted to moisture and food particles. However, I’m not sure what the best course of action is if I find one in my bed. Here are some discussion points I’d love to hear your thoughts on:

  1. What are the best ways to remove silverfish from your bed?
  2. Are there effective prevention methods to keep them out of my bedroom?
  3. How concerned should I be about hygiene and health risks with silverfish in my living space?

Looking forward to hearing your experiences and tips!

Hey Sarah! Ugh, I can imagine how creepy that must’ve been! When I found one in my bathroom, I just caught it in a cup and released it outside. I think it’s a good idea to avoid squishing it since they can leave stains.

Totally agree, Mike! I’ve heard that they can actually multiply pretty quickly if you don’t take care of it right away. It’s best to eliminate their hiding spots first.

You guys are doing it all wrong! If you see one, you should follow up with thorough cleaning to get rid of any eggs or food sources. Also, I recommend getting a dehumidifier if moisture is an issue in your room.

Aside from removing them, it’s important to seal up any cracks or crevices around your home. It’s a good idea to check your books and food storage areas too!

Thanks for the tip, @NatureNerd1! I had no idea they could be in books. I usually keep my food in sealed containers, but maybe I need to check my closet for dampness.

I had the same experience last summer! I found one on my pillow. I freaked out! I ended up washing all my bedding in hot water and using a vacuum to clean the mattress. It worked wonders!

Good call, @CozyCouchPotato! I think frequent washing of bedding is key. Maybe we should start a monthly bedding washing schedule!

Quick health alert: silverfish aren’t known to spread diseases but can trigger allergies in some people. Just keep your space clean, and you should be fine!

That’s reassuring to know, @BugBuster! It’s good to keep perspective, but still, I’d rather not have them crawling around my bed, you know?

Thanks for all the replies, everyone! I feel much more prepared to deal with this now. I’ve decided to invest in a dehumidifier and do a deep clean. Let’s keep this thread going if anyone has more tips!

That moment you spot one on your pillow. ugh! First thing I do is wash the sheets in hot water and vacuum the mattress seams thoroughly.

@SarahJessie88 If moisture is part of the problem, running a dehumidifier overnight could help a lot. Silverfish hate dryness.

Check behind your bookshelves and around cardboard storage boxes. Silverfish LOVE paper, glue, and old book bindings. Maybe move them off the floor or seal them.

Linen fabric is especially attractive to them. I wash pillowcases weekly and store extra clothes in plastic bins to reduce attraction.

@MikeHawk101 Great tip about cracks and crevices, seal them with caulk. Even tiny gaps in baseboards or behind outlet plates let silverfish sneak in.

Switching to synthetic bedding for a while helped me. Natural fibers like cotton or linen seem to trap humidity where silverfish thrive.

I use boric acid lightly around edges of bed frame and dresser legs, safe if kept out of reach and not too much. Made a difference after a couple of weeks.

Decluttering helps big time. Old newspapers, magazines, paper bags, all of that stuff is basically silverfish heaven.

I just flip mattress monthly and let it air out to avoid buildup.
