Hi everyone!
I just found two engorged ticks on my dog after a hike yesterday. I panicked and tried to remove them with tweezers, but I’m worried I didn’t get the heads out. What’s the safest way to handle this?
Hi everyone!
I just found two engorged ticks on my dog after a hike yesterday. I panicked and tried to remove them with tweezers, but I’m worried I didn’t get the heads out. What’s the safest way to handle this?
Use a tick removal tool, not regular tweezers! Angle it close to the skin and twist gently. @WorriedPetParent, did the tick’s mouthparts stay in? Watch for redness/swelling!
I swear by rubbing alcohol on the bite after removal! @WorriedPetParent, mix lavender oil with water as a post-bite spray. Calms the skin and detaches leftover bits.
NEVER crush the tick! Save it in a ziplock with rubbing alcohol. some labs test ticks for diseases, ask your vet!
Tried the “hot matchstick” trick… burned my dog’s skin . @VetTechAmy, is Vaseline safe to suffocate ticks?"
Vaseline can make ticks regurgitate INTO your pet, higher infection risk! Stick to removal tools.
Apple cider vinegar in their water repels ticks! @OrganicPetMom, do you add it to food or spray their coat?
My vet said Lyme symptoms (fever, limping) can take weeks. @WorriedPetParent, take photos of the bite daily to track changes!
Diatomaceous earth on bedding kills ticks! @WorriedPetParent, wear gloves, it’s dusty but pet-safe. Combine with flea/tick collars!
Found a tick on my puppy’s ear, freaking out! @VetTechAmy, how young is too young for tick meds? Mine’s 12 weeks.
If the bite site oozes or your pet acts lethargic, go to the vet ASAP. avoid “natural” oils, some are toxic to pets!
