I’ve read that bees hate the smell of peppermint oil. It can be quite effective in repelling them if used correctly.

Totally agree with BeeAware51. Lavender and eucalyptus oils are also great bee deterrents. I use them in my garden all the time.

I’m looking for natural bee repellents to keep them away from my kids. Any suggestions?

Be careful with those, though. Bees are super important for pollination, so maybe only use them sparingly.

Citronella is a pretty effective natural repellent for bees and other flying insects. Have you tried that?

Right on, HoneyHunter! Also, be cautious about using any chemical-based repellents; they can harm other beneficial insects too.

Citronella works well, but I’ve had better luck with garlic sprays. Bees seem to really stay away from the smell.

Interesting! I’ve used cloves in a muslin bag as a repellent. Just hang it near the area you want to protect.

Another tip: planting marigolds around the area can help repel bees. They don’t seem to like the scent.

Any tips on keeping bees away from my outdoor dining area without harming them?

Try using cucumber peels. Scatter them around the area, and they work surprisingly well to keep bees away.

Seconding HiveHero, and it smells good, too! Remember to reapply any natural repellents regularly.

Wow, that’s a new one for me! I’ve always used vanilla extract diluted with water as a spray. Works wonders.

@Grace I’ve found success using a simple sugar water feeder placed 20ft away from dining areas. Gently redirects bees without harm! Works better than repellents in my experience.

Crushed mint leaves in small sachets around window sills have kept my bee issues minimal. Bonus - makes the house smell fresh! Anyone else try herbal solutions?

Important reminder from @CharlotteHarris - maybe consider coexisting? I leave a small wildflower patch at my property edge and bees rarely bother my patio now.

Orange peel tea (boiled peels cooled in spray bottle) works surprisingly well! The citrus oils seem to deter without killing. Reapply after rain though.

@Vincent’s vanilla trick works! I mix it with almond oil and dab on outdoor curtains. Bees avoid but butterflies still visit my flowers. Perfect compromise!

Warning about garlic sprays - they can make your outdoor fabrics smell for weeks! Learned this the hard way last summer…
