Hey everyone!
I’ve been doing some research into how to keep rats and mice away from my home without resorting to harmful traps or chemicals. I’ve noticed that many people have differing opinions on what actually works. Some swear by essential oils, while others say that ultrasonic devices do the trick.
Great topic, @RodentWhisperer85!
I’ve had some success with peppermint oil. I soaked cotton balls in it and placed them near entry points. It seemed to help for a while, but I’m not sure if it was just a temporary solution. What about you? Have you tried anything?
I’ve also heard about peppermint oil, @OutdoorEnthusiast92. But I’ve found that sealing up gaps and cracks is the most effective method. I think physical barriers are crucial! I spent a weekend sealing up my basement, and I’ve had no issues since.
That’s interesting, @UrbanGardener77! I really want to prioritize sealing before going the repellent route. Did you use any specific materials to seal the gaps?
I used steel wool and caulk. Steel wool is great for small holes, and caulking keeps everything airtight. It’s a bit of a hassle, but well worth it in the end.
I’m skeptical about essential oils, to be honest. @RodentWhisperer85, I’ve had success with ultrasonic devices. My neighbor swears by the one he bought from Amazon—it was pretty affordable and has a dual ultrasonic and electromagnetic feature. Just remember to read reviews before buying!
Thanks for the tip, @TechieTom23! I’ll definitely check the reviews. Have you noticed any significant changes since using it?
Yes! Initially, I noticed fewer droppings around my garage. It’s hard to say if it was the device alone, but it’s been a positive change!
I’ve had a different experience with repelling mice. I’ve read that using a mix of cayenne pepper and water as a spray can work. Anyone tried that?
I’ve used cayenne pepper around my garden! It doesn’t keep them away completely, but it seems to deter them from eating my plants. I think it could work as a repellent around the house too.
Good to know! @NatureNerd88, did you just sprinkle it around, or did you apply it in a more concentrated way?
I mixed it with water and sprayed it. Just be careful not to get it on anything you don’t want to irritate—like your skin!
I’ve heard that keeping a clean home is the best prevention. I’ve been vigilant about food storage and trash disposal, and I haven’t had any issues. How does this tie into what we’ve been discussing?
Absolutely, @CityDweller99! Keeping a clean environment is key. I think that’s a foundational step before using any repellents or traps.
I agree! You can have the best repellents or barriers, but if you leave food out, it won’t matter.
As a final thought, I think combining methods might be the best approach—using physical barriers, cleanliness, and perhaps a natural repellent. It’s all about what works best for you.
Great point, @NatureNerd88! I’ll definitely take a multi-faceted approach to tackle this issue. Thanks for all the insights, everyone!
feed stray cats and put out some food owls like in bird feeders. Once stray cats started making visits I got a lot of dead rodents left at my front door as presents for feeding them, and never saw them in my house after. Owls will also eat rodents like it’s going out of style. This way it’s just nature taking its course.
