I recently moved to a property that seems to be a gopher haven. I’ve tried traps and other methods to keep them at bay, but I recently heard that certain plants can help repel these pesky little critters.
Gophers can be quite destructive, as they dig tunnels and create mounds that damage lawns and gardens. I know some plants are said to be unappealing to them, but I’m not sure which ones are actually effective.
Hey SkepticalSue, great topic! I’ve had my fair share of gopher problems too. From what I’ve researched, it seems that plants like Castor Bean and Thyme work well to repel them.
That’s interesting, ScienceBuffBen! I’ve planted Lavender around my garden, and I’ve noticed a decrease in gopher activity. The strong scent seems to deter them. Plus, it’s beautiful and attracts pollinators!
Totally agree on that, MouseHater22! I’ve also read about using Rue. It’s a perennial herb that’s known to keep gophers away. However, it can be toxic, so be careful if you have pets!
I’ve also had some success using Daffodils. Gophers seem to steer clear of them due to the alkaloids they contain. Plus, they bloom beautifully in spring!
@ScienceBuffBen Is right about castor bean plants - they contain ricin which naturally repels gophers. Just be careful planting them if you have kids or pets, as they’re highly toxic if ingested.
I’ve had great success planting a border of garlic around my vegetable garden. The strong scent seems to mask the smell of my plants that gophers love. Plus, fresh garlic for cooking!
Marigolds work well, but they need to be the right variety. French marigolds seem more effective than African varieties. Plant them densely for best results.
Has anyone tried gopher spurge (Euphorbia lathyris)? It’s sometimes called the ‘gopher plant’ and releases a milky sap that deters them. @HomeHelper have you used this before?
Daffodils are my go-to solution! Not only do they keep gophers away, but they also naturalize beautifully. I plant them in clusters around my property perimeter.
@MouseHater22 mentioned fencing, I combine marigolds with underground wire mesh. The plants deter them from above while the mesh blocks from below. Double protection!"
Rosemary works surprisingly well as a gopher deterrent. The woody stems and strong scent seem to create an effective barrier. Plus, it’s drought-tolerant once established.
