What Pests Are Good for Composting?

Hi everyone!

I’ve recently started composting in my backyard, and I noticed small white worms, ants, and even some beetles in my pile. At first, I panicked, are these pests ruining my compost? But my neighbor said some bugs are actually helpful. Confused!

White worms are likely pot worms, they’re harmless and help decompose organic matter! Red wigglers (composting worms) are even better. @CompostNewbie, add shredded cardboard to balance moisture if they overpopulate!

Black soldier fly larvae are GOLD! They devour food scraps faster than worms and leave nutrient-rich frass. Just cover scraps with leaves to reduce flies. Best compost accelerator ever!

Thanks! How do I tell pot worms from harmful nematodes?

Pot worms are tiny/white and love acidic conditions. Harmful nematodes are rare in compost. Test pH, if it’s below 6, add crushed eggshells to neutralize!

Ants mean your pile’s too dry! They’re not harmful but slow down decomposition. Water the pile and mix thoroughly. Also, avoid meat scraps to deter rodents!

BSFL are great, but their flies freak me out. I stick to red wigglers.

Mites and springtails = healthy compost! They break down fungi and bacteria. If you see centipedes, they’re predators, leave them to control other pests!

@EcoWarrior1 BSFL ate my pumpkin scraps in 2 days! But how do I harvest compost without them crawling everywhere?

BSFL self-harvest! They crawl out when ready. Place a ramp on your bin, they’ll climb into a bucket. Easy peasy!

If pill bugs invade, they’re harmless! They munch on decaying matter. Just keep the pile aerated, they avoid active decomposition zones.
