What kind of gnats are these and how do I actually get rid of them?

Hey everyone,

I’ve started noticing small flying bugs around my home lately, and I’m pretty sure they’re gnats, but I’m not exactly sure which type. Some appear around the kitchen area, while others seem to show up near houseplants and occasionally near windows.

I tried setting up a couple of basic traps and cleaning more frequently, which helped a little, but they’re still around. I’ve read that some gnats are connected to overwatered plants, while others might come from drains or food sources.

For anyone who’s dealt with gnats before, how did you figure out what type they were and what actually worked to get rid of them?

If they’re mostly around houseplants, they might be fungus gnats.

Yeah fungus gnats are really common indoors when soil stays too wet.

@ChloeBennett That was exactly my issue last year with a few plants.

Sticky traps near plants helped me confirm what they were.

I reduced watering for a couple weeks and it made a noticeable difference.

Mine turned out to be coming from the kitchen drain instead.

@NoraLane Drains are definitely another common source people miss.

If they’re flying slowly near windows, sometimes they’re just attracted to light.

I solved mine by combining traps and letting the soil dry out more.

Figuring out the source first really helps, otherwise they just keep coming back.
