I’ve been lucky to avoid major pest problems in my home, but after my neighbor’s house got overrun by rodents last winter, I’m paranoid! I want to take proactive steps to keep pests (rats, insects, you name it) from ever setting up shop here. What are the most effective prevention strategies?
My situation:
- Risk areas: Older home with small foundation cracks, a garden with compost piles, and a cozy attic.
- Preventive attempts: Sealed visible gaps with caulk, store trash in locked bins, and use peppermint oil sprays. Still worried I’m missing something!
- Biggest fears: Termites in the walls, rats in the attic, or ants in the kitchen.
Consistency is key! Monthly deep cleans and immediate trash removal starve pests. Fix leaks ASAP, dampness attracts everything from roaches to silverfish!

Natural deterrents work but need refreshing. I use diatomaceous earth around baseboards and cedar blocks in closets. Reapply after rain or every 3 months!
Schedule annual professional inspections! I missed a tiny crack in my crawl space, and termites cost me 5K. Now ipay 150/year for peace of mind.
For gardens, floating row covers keep pests off veggies. Plant marigolds and basil, they repel aphids and flies. Avoid mulch touching your home’s foundation!
Winter prep: Seal gaps with steel wool + caulk (mice hate chewing steel). Summer prep: Trim bushes 3+ feet from walls to eliminate pest highways.
Store pantry items in glass jars with lids, no more pantry moths! Also, freeze bulk flour for 48 hours before storing to kill eggs.
If you have pets, avoid essential oils. Use food-grade DE instead. For rodents, electronic repellents emit vibrations they hate.

Prevent, don’t react! I spray permethrin barrier treatments every spring. Also, sticky traps in hidden spots for early detection.
