Hey everyone!
I’ve been battling a flea infestation in my home for the past month, and it’s been a nightmare! My poor dog, Max, has been scratching nonstop, and I’ve even found bites on myself. After some research, I learned there are multiple types of fleas, but I’m confused about how to identify them and which treatments work best.
Here’s what I’ve discovered so far:
- Cat Fleas: Apparently, these are the most common, even on dogs!
- Dog Fleas: Less common but still a threat.
- Human Fleas: Rare, but they exist.
- Rodent Fleas: Can spread diseases like typhus.
I’ve tried vacuuming daily, washing bedding in hot water, and using a topical treatment on Max. But the fleas keep coming back!
Ugh, flea struggles are real! For identification: cat fleas are smaller and darker than dog fleas. Check Max’s fur with a flea comb, look for tiny reddish-brown bugs. Diatomaceous earth saved me! Sprinkle it on carpets, wait 24 hours, then vacuum. Just wear a mask, it’s dusty!
@PetParent88 Thanks! Did it harm your pets? I’ve heard mixed things about food-grade DE safety.
Skip the chemicals! Lavender oil diluted in water works as a spray. Also, nematodes in your yard can kill flea larvae. Nature FTW!
As a vet tech, I recommend oral meds like NexGard or Bravecto. They’re faster and safer than collars. Always consult your vet first!
Second this! My pup had a bad reaction to a flea collar. Oral meds + frequent vacuuming = success.
Rodent fleas are the worst! If you have mice/rats nearby, they’ll bring fleas indoors. Seal entry points and set traps.
Professional treatment was a game-changer for me. They used IGRs (Insect Growth Regulators) to break the flea life cycle. Cost $300 but worth it.
Fleas thrive in humidity. In summer, mow your lawn short and keep pet areas dry. Winter’s easier, they hate cold!
Cat fleas jump onto humans too! Wash pet beds weekly and use a flea comb daily. Apple cider vinegar in their water bowl helps repel fleas (my cats don’t mind the taste).
Baking soda + salt on carpets before vacuuming kills eggs. Also, freeze stuffed toys, fleas can’t survive cold temps!
Be careful with essential oils, some are toxic to pets. Tea tree oil is a no-go for cats!
Landlords often ignore flea infestations. Document everything and demand pest control, it’s their legal duty in many states.
Wow, thanks for all the advice! I’m trying DE and washing Max’s bedding daily. Fingers crossed! Anyone else combine natural + chemical methods?
