What Are the Methods for Treating Termites?

Hi everyone!

I’ve battled termites twice in my 1920s home and learned the hard way that misinformation costs thousands. After a “quick fix” DIY spray failed, professionals found colonies in my walls and attic. Now I want to share science-backed solutions to save you from my mistakes!

Liquid termiticides are unbeatable for subterranean termites. They create an invisible barrier that kills colonies in 90 days. DIY-friendly if you trench properly—but wear PPE!

@TermitePro_Steve How deep should the trench be?

6 inches deep along the foundation. Reapply every 5-7 years!

Heat treatment for drywood termites! No chemicals—just 120°F+ heat for 8 hours. Kills 100% but costs 1.5K−4K. Avoid for homes with vinyl siding.

Bait stations are DIY-safe. Place every 10 feet around the house. Check monthly, when termites swarm stations, replace with toxic bait. Takes 3-6 months but works!

Borate wood treatment saved my antique beams. Mix Tim-bor with water, brush onto wood. Prevents future infestations and is pet-safe. Won’t kill active colonies though!

Avoid companies pushing “microwave treatments”, they rarely penetrate deep enough. Always demand:

  • License proof
  • Before/after evidence
  • Minimum 1-year warranty

Post-treatment MUST-DOs:

  • Seal cracks with copper mesh + silicone caulk
  • Redirect downspouts away from foundation
  • Replace soil-contact wood with termite-resistant cedar
  • Annual inspections (100−300)

Spot treatment with orange oil: Drill tiny holes into infested wood, inject oil. Kills termites on contact. Costs 50vs.2K tenting, but only for small, localized infestations!

Fipronil is toxic to pets! Use bait stations near gardens/kid zones. For non-chemical, try nematodes, microscopic worms that eat termite larvae.
