What Are the Lessons Learned from Rat Control Failures?

Hey everyone,

I’ve spent months trying to eliminate rats from my garage, but they’re STILL here! I tried snap traps, poison, and even ultrasonic devices, but nothing worked long-term. Now I’m out of ideas and money.

Rats chewed through my storage boxes and nested behind drywall. I followed online advice, but missed something critical. I want to learn from others’ mistakes before trying again.

My biggest mistake? Not sealing entry points FIRST. Traps just caught a few, but more kept coming. Learn from me, steel wool + caulk gaps BEFORE setting traps!

@NatureLover64 Ugh, I did the same! How do I find ALL the gaps?

Use a flashlight at night, look for grease marks. Rats follow the same paths!

Avoid poison unless you’re ready for dead rat stench. I had 3 die in my walls last summer. Had to rip out drywall—$2k later.

I tried the electric rat zapper and it worked great!

Check your neighbor’s trash! Their overflowing bins fed the rats. I sealed my home but they just migrated next door.

Peanut butter alone doesn’t work forever. Rotate baits—try chocolate, bacon, or nesting material.

I ignored outdoor harborage. Cleared them and saw a 70% drop in rats.

Using only 1-2 traps? Rats breed faster than you can trap. Scale up—10+ traps for serious infestations.

Adopted a “mouser” cat… who napped all day.
