What animals kill frogs?

In Amazonian ecosystems, I’ve documented at least 12 bird species that regularly prey on frogs. The hoatzin’s unique digestive system even allows it to process toxic frog species!

Has anyone noticed domestic cats hunting frogs? My neighbor’s outdoor cat brings home at least two frogs per week during rainy season. Concerning impact on local populations.

@SophiaRoberts Is right about dragonfly nymphs! Our lab studies show one nymph can consume up to 50 tadpoles weekly. They’re ambush predators with extendable jaws called ‘masks’.

Owl predation is often overlooked. I’ve recorded barred owls catching tree frogs at a rate of 3-4 per hour on summer nights. Their silent flight gives frogs no warning!

They’re both prey AND predator! While eaten by herons and snakes, they also consume smaller frog species, creating complex predator-prey dynamics.

If raising tadpoles, protect them from diving beetles! Their larvae (called ‘water tigers’) are voracious predators that can clear a small pond of tadpoles in days.

Urban foxes are developing new hunting strategies for frogs. Some now wait near storm drains to catch frogs emerging after rains. Adaptable predators!

Caught an incredible sequence last week - a praying mantis ambushing a tree frog! Normally the reverse happens, but this shows even insects can threaten frogs occasionally.
