Hi folks,
Hoping someone here has dealt with this before. Over the past couple of weeks, our house has been overrun with tiny gnats. They’re mostly in the kitchen and near windows, but now I’m spotting them in other rooms too.
We’ve cleaned surfaces, taken out trash more often, and even tried a few DIY traps. They help a bit, but the gnats keep coming back. At this point, I’m less interested in quick fixes and more curious about how to actually stop the cycle for good. Any insights would be appreciated.
First thing I’d check is whether they’re fungus gnats. If you have houseplants, overwatered soil is a huge breeding ground.
Same issue here last summer. Turns out they were coming from the kitchen drain, not food. Once I cleaned the drain thoroughly, numbers dropped fast.
@FreshStartMama Good point. I had no idea plants could cause it until I let the soil dry out and suddenly the gnats were gone.
Traps only deal with adults. You really have to find where they’re laying eggs, otherwise it feels never-ending.
We noticed them getting worse after doing dishes at night. Moisture plus leftover food bits seems to attract them more than I expected.
@CaveDweller666 Interesting — did you use anything specific in the drain, or just physical cleaning?
For us it was a combo of drains and trash cans. Even a clean-looking bin can have residue under the rim.
I avoided sprays and focused on drying things out. Less moisture overall made the biggest difference long-term.
@NatureLover64 I used a drain brush first, then hot water over a few days. Once the slime was gone, the gnats stopped coming back.
The key takeaway here seems to be source control. Once you cut off where they breed, everything else finally works.
