Just noticed a wasp nest forming under my porch railing, and I’m debating whether to handle it myself or call a professional. It’s not huge yet, but I don’t want it to turn into a full colony.
For those who’ve dealt with wasp nests before — how do you decide what’s safe to DIY? And if you do it yourself, what’s the best way to avoid getting stung or making them angry?
Would love to hear how you’ve handled similar situations!
If the nest is smaller than a baseball, I usually take care of it myself at night with a long spray. But anything larger than that, I don’t mess with it. Those wasps can be mean when disturbed.
Totally agree. Timing matters a lot. Doing it after sunset when they’re all inside the nest helps. Just make sure you’ve got an escape plan in case they get aggressive.
Also depends on the species. Paper wasps are less aggressive than yellowjackets. If you’re not sure what kind they are, calling a pro might save you a world of pain.
Had a nest under my roof edge last summer — I tried DIY first and got chased halfway across the yard . Ended up calling pest control the next day. Worth every penny.
@BuzzedOff same thing happened to my neighbor! People underestimate how fast wasps can swarm. If it’s close to windows or a walkway, I wouldn’t risk it.
I handle small nests myself every spring before they grow. Use a long stick or pole, knock it down gently at night, then spray the area. Just wear a hoodie and gloves. Not foolproof, but it works for me.
I once tried using a homemade trap instead, sugar water and vinegar mix. It didn’t remove the nest but definitely reduced the number of wasps hanging around.
For me, the rule is simple: Small and reachable = DIY at night. Big, high, or near people = call a pro.
No shame in playing it safe when stingers are involved.
