Using Diatomaceous Earth as Prevention — Anyone Actually Had Success?

Hey everyone,
I’ve been seeing Diatomaceous Earth (DE) recommended everywhere lately—from gardens to basements—as a “natural” way to keep pests away. Before sharing it with others on my site, I figured I’d ask the community: Does DE actually work as a long-term preventive method?

Some folks swear by it, others say it only works if pests crawl directly through the powder. I’m curious what real-life results people here have had, especially for things like roaches, ants, and pantry bugs.

Would love to hear your experiences, tips, or any mistakes to avoid.

I’ve used DE around my kitchen baseboards, and honestly, it helped a little, but only when I kept reapplying it. Any bit of moisture and it basically stops working. Great for super dry spots though.

Same here. It’s not a magic fix, but if you combine it with cleaning and sealing entry points, it definitely reduces the number of crawlers over time.

I think a lot of people expect DE to work instantly, but it’s more of a slow burn. Took about a week before I noticed fewer sugar ants. Not fast, but harmless and cheap.

Be careful with “food-grade vs. pool-grade.” Pool-grade DE is not what you want. I’ve seen people grab the wrong bag and regret it instantly.

@UrbanEcoGal Totally agree. Also, don’t puff it all over your house. I did that once and ended up with white powder everywhere… looked like I tried to remodel using flour.

For roaches? Meh. Works only if they crawl through it, and roaches are annoyingly good at avoiding stuff. I still keep a line of DE behind the fridge though—just in case.

I actually got great results in my tiny home! Sprinkled a thin line along the plumbing access panels. Within a couple days, way fewer centipedes. I reapply every month or so.

If you’re thinking outdoor use, DE is almost useless once it rains. I tried using it around my garden beds—washed away every time. Indoors only, IMO.

@GreenThumb42 I’d say DE is good as prevention, not as a cure. If you already have a heavy infestation, you’ll need traps or baits first, then DE to keep things under control after.

Jumping in late, but I’ve had mixed results. Works great for ants, did nothing for the occasional silverfish. Still, it’s cheap enough that I keep a bag around for “just in case.”
