Hey everyone,
I’m looking for practical advice on keeping rats away from my property. We don’t have a full-blown infestation, but I’ve seen droppings near the shed and along the fence line, which makes me nervous. I’ve read a lot of conflicting advice online, so I’m hoping to hear real experiences from people who’ve dealt with this successfully.
For me, the biggest win was eliminating food sources. Bird feeders, pet food in the garage, even fallen fruit from trees. Once those were gone, rat activity dropped fast. Repellents alone never did much.
I second that. Yard cleanup matters way more than most people think. Trim bushes back from the house and keep compost sealed. It’s boring work, but it helps long-term.
I tried ultrasonic repellers and honestly didn’t see any change. Maybe they work in some situations, but the rats around here didn’t seem impressed at all.
Sealing entry points is huge. Even small gaps around vents or where pipes enter the house can become highways for rats. Once we sealed everything and added metal mesh, sightings stopped.
Has anyone had luck with peppermint oil or similar scents? I keep seeing that suggested, but it feels a bit like wishful thinking.
@BudgetBeater I tried peppermint oil around the shed. Maybe it helped a little, but it wasn’t a solution by itself. Think of it as a minor deterrent, not a fix.
We installed motion-activated lights near problem areas, and it surprisingly worked. Rats seem to prefer dark, quiet spots. Combined with cleanup, it made a difference.
If you’re still seeing signs after all that, it might be time for traps or professional help. I waited too long and wish I’d acted earlier.
@MindfulRodent One thing I learned is that consistency matters. Doing one thing once doesn’t work. You have to keep up with maintenance, or they come back.
Professional services can be pricey, but for ongoing issues they’re sometimes worth it. At least for an inspection, so you know exactly what you’re dealing with.
