Tiny Roaches Showing Up Randomly in My Kitchen — Am I Dealing with an Infestation?

Hey everyone,

Over the past week, I’ve noticed tiny roaches showing up here and there in my kitchen — mostly near the sink and behind the microwave. I’ve kept everything clean, sealed up food, and even scrubbed the counters, but they still appear at night when the lights are off.

I’m not sure if this means I have a full infestation or just a few strays that wandered in. What’s the best way to tell if it’s getting serious? And if it is, what’s the most effective way to stop it before it gets worse?

If you’re seeing them at night, it’s likely not just a few strays. Roaches hide deep during the day and come out after dark. Try checking under the sink, behind the fridge, and inside cabinets, that’s where I found the main source in my house.

I went through this last year. Those tiny ones are probably German roaches. Once you start seeing a few, there are usually a lot more hiding somewhere warm and damp. Consistent cleaning helps, but you’ll probably need traps or bait too.

Agree with @KitchenTamer. I made the mistake of thinking it was “just a few.” Two weeks later, I found them behind the stove, nesting near the wall outlet. Act fast before they spread.

Not always an infestation, though. Sometimes they can come in through plumbing or a shared wall if you live in an apartment. Sealing around pipes and using sticky traps can help you figure out where they’re coming from.

Yeah, once you start seeing them during the day, that’s when you know it’s bad. I used to think I was clean enough to avoid them, but they just need a water source to stick around.

@RoachReality exactly. People underestimate how much moisture attracts them. I put a small dehumidifier under my sink, and it really reduced their numbers over time.

I’ve had success finding their trails by sprinkling a bit of flour or cornstarch near the walls overnight. You’ll see where they travel by morning, creepy but effective.

Good tip, @CoffeeCupChaos! I did something similar with baby powder to trace where they were coming from. Turned out they were crawling out of a tiny crack near the backsplash.

If you keep seeing small ones, especially near the sink, that usually means eggs are hatching nearby. The earlier you take action, the easier it is to control.

I’d say monitor for a few days and set out a few sticky traps to confirm. If the traps catch several in one night, it’s time to treat it seriously. Roaches multiply fast once they’re settled in.
