Tiny Brown Ladybug-Looking Bugs Invading My Home – What Are They?

Hey everyone,

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve started noticing tiny brown bugs showing up around my windows, walls, and even a few light fixtures. At first, I thought they were baby ladybugs, but after getting a closer look, they don’t seem quite right.

They’re:

  • Small and round-ish

  • Brown or mottled brown in color

  • Slow-moving

  • Often found near windows

The strange part is that I’m finding more of them every day.

I’m hoping someone here has dealt with something similar:

  • What are these bugs most likely to be?

  • Are they harmful to people, pets, or fabrics?

  • Did you figure out where they were coming from?

  • What actually got rid of them?

Any advice would be appreciated because I’m starting to find them in multiple rooms now.

I had something similar a while back, and they turned out to be carpet beetles. They were always showing up around windows and seemed to appear out of nowhere. The adults weren’t really a problem but I did a deep clean, vacuumed thoroughly, and checked closets and stored fabrics, which helped reduce them quite a bit.

Hopefully that’s all it is, but if you can get a close-up photo, it might be easier for someone to identify them for sure.

That sounds a lot like carpet beetles. The adults are often mistaken for tiny ladybugs.

I was thinking the same thing. Check if they have a mottled pattern on their backs.

@RiverStoneHazel Mine turned out to be carpet beetles too. I originally thought they were some type of beetle from outside.

Do you see them mostly near windows? Adult carpet beetles are often attracted to light.

I found dozens around my upstairs windows one spring. They were definitely carpet beetles.

If they are carpet beetles, the larvae are usually more of a concern than the adults.

@PrairieLaneTheo Exactly. The adults were annoying, but the larvae were what damaged stored fabrics.

Check closets, rugs, and stored clothing. That’s where I eventually found the source.

Mine seemed to appear out of nowhere, but they were actually coming from an old wool blanket in storage.

If you’re finding more every day, I’d start looking for larvae and shed skins. That’s what helped me confirm what they were and finally track down the infestation source.
