Tiny black flies/gnats flying near our faces — what are these?

Hey everyone,

oping someone can help identify what’s going on. Over the past week we’ve noticed tiny black flies constantly hovering around our faces, especially indoors. They don’t seem to bite, but they’re super annoying and always aim for eyes and noses.

We’ve checked for obvious food sources and cleaned drains, but they’re still hanging around. What’s weird is they’re not really swarming lights — just people.

Sounds a lot like fungus gnats to me, especially if you have houseplants. They love damp soil.

If they’re near faces but not food, check bathroom and laundry drains too. I had drain flies that acted similar at first.

Overwatering was the culprit in my case. Once I let the soil dry out more, their numbers dropped fast.

@FaceBuzzed Are they worse near windows during the day? Mine were coming in from outside when it warmed up.

Apple cider vinegar traps helped confirm what they were, but didn’t fully solve it.

I ended up repotting everything and tossing one bad plant. That finally stopped the cycle.

More air movement helped too. A small fan in the room made it harder for them to hover near faces.

@PlantShelfPro Same here, no plants, no gnats. Learned that the hard way.

This seems to pop up late summer every year for us, especially after humid weeks.

Once the moisture source was gone, it took about a week for them to disappear completely.
