Termite frass or just old house dust? Can’t tell if I should panic

Hey everyone,
I noticed a small pile of fine, sand-like material near a baseboard in my living room, and now I’m spiraling a bit. It could just be old house dust or debris falling from inside the wall — but part of me is worried it might be termite frass.

I’ve tried comparing photos online, but everything starts to look the same after a while.
Before I jump to worst-case conclusions, I’d love some outside opinions:

  • Are there easy ways to tell termite frass apart from normal dust?

  • Does frass usually show up in specific spots or patterns?

  • At what point is it worth calling a professional instead of just cleaning it up?

Hoping I’m overthinking this, but figured it’s better to ask.

If it looks like uniform little pellets rather than fluffy dust, that’s usually the red flag people mention.

I had something similar last year. Turned out to be debris from an old window frame, not termites.

Frass tends to pile up below tiny kick-out holes in wood. Dust is usually more spread out.

@FixItNervous Did you notice any pin-sized holes above the pile? That was the giveaway in my case.

Also depends on the color. Termite frass usually matches the wood they’re eating, not gray household dust.

I wouldn’t panic yet. Clean it up, mark the spot, and see if it comes back in a day or two.

@WoodBeamWill That’s exactly what my inspector pointed out, location matters as much as texture.

Old homes shed all kinds of weird stuff from inside the walls. Not everything dusty is a pest problem.

If it keeps reappearing in the same place, that’s when I’d call someone. One inspection is cheaper than guessing.

@CalmAndFix I’ll check again in daylight. Appreciate the calm advice, definitely helped slow the panic.
