Hi folks,
looking for some insight here. After the last few heavy rainstorms, I suddenly noticed tiny jumping bugs all over my basement floor and near the back door. From what I can tell, they’re springtails.
I’ve never dealt with them before, and the sheer number is what’s throwing me off. They don’t seem aggressive, but they’re definitely everywhere when it’s damp. I’m trying to understand:
-
Why rain seems to trigger a sudden invasion
-
Whether they’re actually coming from outside or breeding indoors
-
And most importantly, what realistically works to keep them from coming back
Would love to hear what’s worked (or not worked) for others.
Springtails are almost always a moisture issue. Rain drives them out of saturated soil, so they look for drier ground — unfortunately that’s often indoors.
Had the same thing happen last spring. They vanished once things dried out, but every big storm brought them back for a while.
I tried spraying randomly at first and it was pointless. They kept coming because the source wasn’t addressed.
Check drainage and humidity levels. Dehumidifiers made a noticeable difference for me within a week.
@DIYorRegret that’s what I’m worried about, feels like I’m just chasing them around instead of fixing anything.
They’re not really “infesting” like roaches do. More like wandering in because conditions outside got worse.
Mulch right up against the house was my issue. Pulled it back and numbers dropped fast.
@RainyBasement Once moisture was under control, I stopped seeing them without using chemicals at all.
Honestly, they’re annoying but temporary. Every rainy season I see a spike, then nothing once things dry out.
Agree with others, drying things out beats trying to kill every last one.
