Saw one big black cockroach in my kitchen — how bad is this really?

Hey folks,
Woke up late last night and walked into my kitchen only to see a big black cockroach crawl across the floor and disappear behind the stove. I managed to kill it, but now my brain won’t stop spiraling.

I’ve heard people say that seeing one big roach isn’t as bad as seeing small ones, but I don’t know how true that is. This thing was fast, dark, and definitely not small. I haven’t seen any others yet, but now I’m checking every corner like a paranoid raccoon.

For those who’ve dealt with this before — is one big roach usually a sign of a bigger problem, or could it honestly just be a random intruder?

Big black ones are often outdoor roaches that wander inside by mistake, especially if it’s warm or rainy outside.

I know people say “one isn’t a big deal,” but every time I ignored it, I ended up seeing another one later. I’d stay alert for a bit.

@KitchenShock if it was really large and dark, that’s actually slightly better than seeing small light-brown ones. The small ones usually mean breeding indoors.

Check around your stove and fridge area. Even if it came from outside, those spots tend to attract them if there’s heat or moisture.

One roach doesn’t automatically mean infestation. Multiple sightings over days or seeing them during the daytime is when it gets concerning.

@PanicCleanRepeat Same experience here. First time I brushed it off, second time I regretted not acting sooner.

Season matters too. I see the occasional big one every summer and nothing else the rest of the year.

If you killed it and haven’t seen anything since, that’s a good sign. Just keep things dry and sealed for now.

@OldApartmentVet Totally agree. In apartments especially, one big roach can just be passing through from another unit.

I’d say don’t panic yet, but don’t forget about it either. One is a warning, not a verdict.
