Hey everyone,
I’ve been dealing with a really frustrating problem lately. I’ve set out several rat traps around my garage and attic, but they haven’t caught a single thing. I know for sure the rats are still around — I can hear them at night and I’ve found fresh droppings.
I’m trying to figure out what I might be doing wrong. Is it placement? Bait? Scent? Or maybe they’re just too smart for the traps I’m using?
Rats can be super cautious. If they sense anything new in their environment, they’ll avoid it for days. Try leaving the traps unset for a bit so they get used to them.
Placement matters more than most people think. Corners, along walls, behind storage boxes — those are usually hot spots. If they don’t feel “protected” while approaching it, they won’t bother.
Bait could be the issue too. A lot of people use too much. A tiny smear works better because the rat has to work harder to get it.
I had this problem last year. Turned out I wasn’t looking for the runways. Once I found their regular path, things changed quickly.
@RodentRanger Totally agree with you there, letting the traps sit for a couple of days helped me a lot too. They stopped treating them like suspicious objects.
Also check if you’re touching the traps with bare hands. Sounds silly, but human scent can make some rats avoid them altogether.
I usually rotate baits every few nights. Sometimes they just don’t care for what you’re offering, and switching it up breaks the pattern.
For me, the breakthrough was anchoring the traps so they couldn’t drag them off. I didn’t realize they were actually nudging them away instead of triggering them.
@DIYBasementPro That wall-hugging thing is so true. I moved mine just a few inches closer to the wall and caught something the next morning.
Give it time. Once one takes the bait, the rest usually get bolder or careless. The first catch is always the hardest.
