Mud Daubers in the Garage: Harmless Guests or Hidden Threat?

Hey everyone,
I’ve noticed several mud dauber nests popping up in the corners of my garage this week. I’ve always heard they’re not aggressive like yellow jackets, but seeing them build right above my workbench still makes me a little uneasy.

I’m trying to figure out a few things before I decide what to do:

  • Are mud daubers actually dangerous, or mostly harmless unless bothered?

  • Do they reuse the same nests, or abandon them after the season?

  • Is it better to remove the nests right away, or just let them finish the season and clean up later?

  • Could having them around attract other pests?

Any experiences or advice would be great.

Mud daubers are pretty chill compared to other wasps. They usually keep to themselves unless you start poking at their nests.

I get them every summer in my shed. They come and go without bothering anyone. I just scrape the nests off once they’re empty.

If you’re allergic to stings, I’d still keep your distance. They’re calm, but they can sting if cornered.

@GarageMom78 True, but I’ve worked around them a ton and never had one act aggressive. They’re more focused on spiders than people.

They don’t reuse old nests in most cases. Mine build fresh ones every year in the exact same corner, though.

Abandoned nests can get crumbly and messy. If you don’t mind a little debris, no big deal.

Had a few in my garage rafters last year. I left them alone and they were gone by fall. Zero issues.

If the nests are near doors or areas you walk through a lot, I’d move them sooner. They don’t attack, but having them buzz around your head is irritating.

I’ve noticed other spiders hanging around once the daubers leave. Probably because there’s leftover food matter inside the old nests.

@PestTalkJay Yeah same here. I keep mine off the sides of the garage door because they get bumped when it opens.
