Hey folks!
I’ve seen so many pest control products hyped up online — sprays, traps, ultrasonic gadgets, you name it — and I’m starting to wonder which ones actually deserve the attention. Some people swear by Diatomaceous Earth, others say it’s all placebo. Then there are those fancy electronic repellents that promise to chase everything from mice to mosquitoes with sound waves.
I thought it’d be interesting to ask everyone here:
-
What’s the most overrated pest control product you’ve ever tried?
-
What’s one underrated gem that actually works?
-
Do “natural” solutions live up to the hype, or is it all marketing fluff?
Would love to hear your honest takes — especially from those who’ve been battling pests for a while.
For me, the most underrated is neem oil. It’s not instant, but it wrecks insect life cycles long-term and is safe for plants and pets. Overrated? “All-natural” sprays with essential oils. Smells nice, but the bugs don’t care.
Overrated: “No-kill” live traps. Tried them for mice, they figured out how to grab the bait and escape. Underrated: steel wool. Block those entry points and you’ll never see them again.
From a pest tech’s perspective, foggers are way overrated. They make it look like you’re solving the problem, but they rarely hit the source. Gel baits and IGRs (insect growth regulators) are the real heroes for roaches and ants.
Underrated: Diatomaceous Earth (DE) — if used correctly. Spread thin, not piled up. It’s slow but super effective against crawling insects. Overrated? Those “eco-fog” sprays that claim to kill everything in minutes. They just make everything smell like citrus for a day.
Overrated: citronella candles. Great for mood lighting, useless against mosquitoes. Underrated: fans. A steady breeze on the porch keeps flying insects away way better than half the gadgets I’ve tried.
People sleep on bait stations. Everyone wants instant kills, but slow-acting poison baits wipe out colonies. Overrated? Any product labeled “ultra-fast results” — usually means surface kill only.
Overrated: sticky traps. They just catch random dust after a week. Underrated: vinegar + dish soap spray for fruit flies. Cheap, safe, and weirdly effective.
Can confirm — boric acid is the GOAT. My grandmother used it, I still use it.
