Mice keep digging around a hole I stuffed — what actually stops them?

Hi everyone,

I found a hole near the corner of my garage wall where mice were getting in. I stuffed it with some material (foam + whatever I had on hand), and for a couple days it seemed fine.

Now they’re back and actually digging around the same spot again. It looks like they’re trying to reopen it or create a new entry point right next to it.

Clearly what I used isn’t enough to stop them long-term. For those who’ve dealt with this before, what actually works to block them for good? Is it more about the material, or do I need to combine it with traps as well?

Mice can chew through foam pretty easily. That’s probably why they came back.

You need something tougher like steel wool combined with sealant.

I had the same issue and they just kept widening the hole until I reinforced it properly.

Also check if there are other entry points nearby. They rarely rely on just one hole.

@GreenBuildSam steel wool worked for me too, especially when packed tightly.

Even if you seal it, if mice are already inside they’ll try to get out or back in somewhere else.

I’d definitely combine sealing with traps. Otherwise they’ll keep testing weak spots.

@HomeGridNate exactly. I sealed a hole once but didn’t trap them, and they just chewed a new one.

Hardware cloth or metal mesh behind the seal works better than just stuffing material.

Once I used metal + sealant together, they finally stopped coming back to that spot.
