Larder beetles in the room… I think?

Hi everyone,

Over the past few days I’ve been noticing some small dark beetles in my room, mostly near the baseboards and sometimes around the window. After searching online, they kind of look like larder beetles, but I’m not 100% sure.

I don’t keep food in my room, but I do have a closet and some storage boxes. I’m starting to wonder if something inside might be attracting them. I’ve only seen a few so far, but I’m worried there might be more hiding somewhere.

Has anyone here dealt with larder beetles before? How did you confirm what they were and what actually worked to get rid of them?

Yeah that does sound like larder beetles. I had them once and they were coming from an old box of pet food in a closet.

Check for anything organic stored nearby. Sometimes even old wool items or stored snacks can attract them.

If you’re seeing them near baseboards there might be a food source in the wall or attic space.

I’d start with a deep vacuum around the room edges and under furniture. That helped reduce them a lot in my case.

I had them show up after I stored some dried fish treats for my dog in a drawer. Took me a while to figure it out.

@NatureNerd88 same thing happened to me but with bird seed storage. Once I removed it the beetles disappeared pretty quickly.

Another place to check is under the bed or behind shelves. Sometimes dead insects can attract them too.

Larder beetles can also show up if there was a dead rodent somewhere in the structure. Not super common but it happens.

@RodentWatcher92 that’s actually a good point. I found them once near a wall where something had died in the crawlspace.

Good news is if you find the source early, they’re usually pretty manageable compared to other pests.
