Hey everyone,
I’ve been trying to use more natural pest control methods around my home instead of immediately reaching for chemical products. I’ve seen people recommend everything from peppermint oil and vinegar sprays to cedar, diatomaceous earth, and other “natural” solutions.
Some people claim they work surprisingly well, while others say they’re mostly useful for prevention rather than solving an actual infestation.
So I’m interested in hearing real experiences.
-
Have natural pest control methods actually worked for you?
-
Which pests were you trying to deal with?
-
Were the results long-term or only temporary?
-
If you had to recommend one natural method, what would it be?
I’m hoping to separate real success stories from internet myths.
I’ve had decent success using peppermint oil around entry points, but I had to reapply it pretty often.
Natural methods helped keep insects away in my garden, but indoors I needed a combination of approaches.
I think they’re better at prevention than eliminating an existing infestation.
@FlowerFriendFred I agree. Once pests are already established, natural products alone usually weren’t enough for me.
Diatomaceous earth worked well for crawling insects in dry areas, but I had to keep it dry for it to stay effective.
I tried vinegar sprays for ants. It removed the trail for a while, but they eventually came back.
@EcoYardMom What type of pest are you trying to deal with? I’ve noticed natural methods vary a lot depending on the pest.
For me, the biggest improvement came from sealing entry points and keeping the house clean. The natural products were more of a helpful extra.
I like using cedar in storage areas because it’s simple and doesn’t leave a strong chemical smell.
My takeaway is that natural pest control absolutely has its place, especially for prevention and light pest issues. But for a serious infestation, I found it worked best when combined with good sanitation, exclusion, and targeted control methods rather than relying on natural remedies alone.
