Is It Normal for Raccoons to Keep Coming Back After Trapping?

Hey everyone,

I’m hoping someone here has dealt with this before. I trapped a raccoon that kept getting into my yard and had it relocated, but now I’m noticing new raccoons showing up again.

Is this normal?

I thought removing the troublemaker would solve the issue, but it feels like the minute one is gone, another steps right in like it owns the place.

Totally normal. Raccoons are super territorial, so if one leaves, another might move in pretty fast.

Yeah, they follow food sources more than anything. If there’s easy access to snacks, they’re gonna keep showing up.

Happened to me last year. I trapped three in the same month because the area was just too appealing for them.

@NightRaidNora Exactly. If you’ve got open trash or pet food outside, they’ll treat your yard like a buffet.

I noticed they also come back when there’s water nearby. Birdbaths were a big draw for mine.

Relocating helps, but unless you change what attracts them, new ones will just cycle through.

You might want to try motion lights or sprinklers. They’re skittish enough that it usually scares them off.

@PorchLightPam Same for me, I had to dump the birdbath for a while before they finally stopped dropping by.

If you see them around the same time every night, they’re probably just following a routine path through the neighborhood.

If you’re really dealing with a lot of them, a wildlife specialist can help figure out what’s drawing them in.
