If You Kill a Mouse, Will More Come?

Hey everyone,
I recently had a bit of a mouse problem in my garage, and after trapping and killing a couple, I heard some old wives’ tales suggesting that killing one mouse might actually attract more. I did a little research, and it seems there’s mixed information out there. Some say it has to do with pheromones and the scent of death attracting other mice, while others say it might just be a coincidence.

Hey DryDogDude, Great topic! I think the idea that killing one mouse attracts more is partly rooted in the fact that mice often live in groups. If one mouse is caught, it could be that others are already in the area looking for food.

That’s true, HomeHelper! I read that mice are very social creatures and if one is removed, the others might just be wandering around. I guess it’s also a sign that there might be more in your garage!

While I agree with you both, I think it can depend on how you handle the situation after catching them. If there are food sources available, more mice will come regardless.

Exactly! Sealing up food and potential entry points is key. I’ve had success with peppermint oil as a deterrent, smells nice and is humane!

That’s interesting, @SafePawsOnly! I might give that a try. I’ve heard about using ultrasonic devices too. Anyone tried those?

I’ve read that the scent of a dead mouse could attract other predators, which might not be ideal for your garage, either.

That’s a good point, @MightyMouser! I hadn’t considered that aspect. It’s a whole ecosystem out there!

For me, the best method has been to use live traps and then release them far from my home. It feels better than killing them.

I think live traps are great, but you have to be diligent about checking them regularly. I’ve heard some sad stories of mice being trapped for days.

That’s true, and it’s important to release them far enough away so they don’t just come back!

What about prevention? I always make sure to clean up spills and keep my kitchen tidy. That reduces the likelihood of attracting them in the first place!

Yes! Prevention is key. I also make sure to dispose of garbage regularly and keep it sealed.

Good points! Sometimes, just a little diligence goes a long way in avoiding problems altogether.
