I put a bug bomb in my car… now what am I supposed to do?

Hey folks,
I may have jumped the gun here. I found ants and a couple random bugs in my car and decided to use a bug bomb last night without fully thinking it through. The fogger went off, doors closed, and now I’m sitting here wondering… what’s next?

I haven’t gone back inside yet. Do I just open the doors and wait? Do I need to wipe everything down? And how long before it’s actually safe to drive again?

If you’ve done this before (or regret doing it ), I’d really appreciate any advice on what to do after the bomb.

First thing: air it out. All doors open, windows down, let it breathe for a while. I left mine open in the driveway for about 45 minutes before even leaning inside. The smell can be strong.

After ventilation, I’d definitely wipe down high-touch surfaces — steering wheel, shifter, seatbelt buckle, door handles. You don’t need to scrub the whole interior, but those spots matter.

Not gonna lie, bug bombs in cars are kind of overkill. They kill what’s there, but don’t stop reinfestation. Make sure the food source is gone or they’ll be back.

I did this once years ago. Drove too soon and got a headache, learned my lesson. Give it more time than the label says, especially if it’s hot out.

@RoadTripRick What kind of bugs were you dealing with? Ants vs roaches vs random flies makes a difference in what you should do next.

Mostly ants, a few tiny beetle-looking things. No roaches (thankfully). I’ll definitely wipe things down before driving.

If you want to be extra safe, a quick interior vacuum after airing out helps remove residue and dead bugs. I see a lot of cars come in after foggers.

Also worth checking the bomb instructions, some specifically say cars aren’t recommended. Not judging, just something to know for next time.

Honestly, you’re probably fine once it’s aired out and wiped down. Next step is prevention: seal gaps, no food crumbs, maybe bait instead of fogging if it happens again.

This thread is making me glad I stopped at sticky traps instead of bombing my car last summer :grimacing: Good luck, sounds like you caught it early.
