Hi folks,
Looking for some advice. Over the past week, I’ve noticed several large black flies suddenly appearing in my basement. I don’t spend much time down there, so I’m not sure how long this has been going on, but now it feels like every day I see a few more.
There’s no obvious trash or standing water, and the space is mostly unfinished with a concrete floor. I’m wondering if this is just a seasonal thing or a sign of a bigger problem hiding somewhere. Has anyone dealt with something similar, and is this something I should be concerned about right away?
Basements tend to attract flies because of moisture, even if it doesn’t look damp.
I had big black flies show up when something died behind a wall. Took a while to figure out.
Sometimes floor drains or sump areas are the source, especially if they’re rarely used.
@OldHouseOwner That’s exactly what happened to us too. Smell showed up days later.
Warm weather plus humidity can trigger fly activity fast, especially underground spaces.
@DrainCheck good point, I honestly haven’t looked at the drain in months.
They might not be breeding inside. Flies can come in through tiny foundation gaps.
Dehumidifying made a huge difference for us. Fewer insects overall.
@SeasonalShift agree. Every summer my basement gets some kind of insect surge.
If it keeps escalating, it’s usually worth tracking down the source early rather than waiting.
