How to Stop Ground Wasps from Coming Back Every Summer

Hey everyone!

Summer’s here again, and with it comes the annoying issue of ground wasps in my backyard. No matter how many times I try to remove them, they seem to come back every year. I’ve done some reading, and I’ve found various methods people suggest, but I wanted to see what has worked best for you all.

I’ve had some success using diatomaceous earth around the areas where they nest. It’s harmless to pets and humans but deadly to insects. Just sprinkle it around before summer starts!

That sounds interesting, Hank! I’ve read that sealing up any holes or crevices in your yard can help prevent them from settling in. I usually check my lawn and gardens for any potential nesting spots early in the season.

That’s a great point! What materials do you typically use to seal those holes? I’m worried about the potential for other critters to get in instead.

I use caulk for smaller cracks, and for larger holes, I fill them with soil or gravel. Just make sure to do it right after you’ve spotted the nests, as they can be sneaky!

I swear by peppermint oil! If you mix it with water and spray it around your garden, it seems to deter them. I do this every week during the summer.

I’ve heard about that too! However, does it really last? I mean, with rain and everything, won’t it wash away?

Good question! It does have to be reapplied after heavy rains, but I find it worth it because it also makes my garden smell amazing!

Sounds like a win-win! I’ll definitely give that a shot in between the diatomaceous earth applications.

If they do come back, I suggest using a professional service. I tried to handle one nest myself once, and let’s just say, it didn’t end well for me!

That’s always a risk. Sometimes, it’s best to leave it to the experts if you’re unsure. They have the right equipment and knowledge to deal with it safely.

Right! But for those who want to try DIY, what would you recommend as the safest method for removal?

Wear protective clothing! And approach in the evening when they’re less active. Use a spray designed for wasps from a safe distance.

If you can, wait until the evening when they are less active to remove the nest. Also, have a friend with you just in case!

Great @SafePawsOnly! And I read that using a vacuum can work too, but you have to ensure it’s designed for insects, so they don’t escape.

Yes! Just make sure to seal the vacuum bag tightly after you’re done. You don’t want any survivors!
