Hey everyone,
I’ve been fighting a cockroach invasion for months now, and I’m tired of the temporary fixes. I’ve tried sprays, traps, and even a professional treatment, but they always seem to come back.
I know roaches are tough survivors, so I’d love to hear what’s actually worked long-term for you all. Here are some questions to get the discussion going:
-
What methods have permanently eliminated cockroaches in your home?
-
Are DIY remedies (like boric acid or baking soda mixtures) worth it?
-
How often should you reapply or refresh treatments?
-
What’s the most effective strategy to stop them from coming back once they’re gone?
Would love to hear from people who’ve actually beaten these pests for good.
Hands down, gel baits like Advion or Combat Max are the best. I used to bomb and spray with no luck, but once I started baiting, the numbers dropped fast. Within two weeks, I barely saw a single one. The trick is to place tiny dots where they hide — behind the fridge, under the sink, cabinet corners.
I went the natural route — mixed boric acid, sugar, and flour into little dough balls. It took a few days, but they worked! I found dead roaches everywhere. Definitely a slow burn, but it’s cheap and pet-safe if placed carefully.
As someone who’s done pest control for years: sprays = short-term, baits + sanitation = long-term. Most people forget that food residue and moisture keep colonies alive. Fix leaks, vacuum crumbs, seal food — that’s half the battle.
Vacuum daily for two weeks. Sounds overkill, but it clears eggs and food crumbs they rely on. I paired that with bait stations and sealed every crack I could find. Haven’t seen a roach in six months.
I’ll second that, sealing cracks is key. I used silicone caulk around pipes and baseboards. Before that, I’d kill one every night. After sealing + baiting, total silence.
My landlord wouldn’t do anything, so I fought back myself. I used IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) spray plus gel bait. The IGR keeps eggs from hatching, it broke their life cycle completely. Took about 3–4 weeks to clear them all out.
For apartments, coordinate with neighbors if you can. I cleaned up everything, but they kept coming through the shared walls until the folks next door treated theirs too. Roaches don’t respect property lines.
Bait rotation. Roaches can become bait-resistant if you use the same brand forever. I switch between two formulas every few months to keep them guessing. Works great.
Also, don’t forget drains. Roaches love kitchens and bathrooms because of moisture. Pour some hot water and baking soda down drains weekly, it helps deter them.
I finally beat them with a combo of gel bait, boric powder, and discipline. Cleaning every night, no dirty dishes left out, and constant inspection. It’s not one magic product, it’s consistency that wins.
