How to Lure a Rat Out of Hiding: Tips from the Pros

Hey everyone!

I’ve been dealing with a little rat problem in my home lately, and it seems that these little critters are great at hiding. I’ve done some reading, but I wanted to reach out to the community for some expert advice.

From what Ive gathered, rats are generally nocturnal and can be quite wary of traps. I’m interested in various methods to lure them out without causing too much distress or harm. Here are some specific points I’d love to hear your thoughts on:

  1. What bait works best to attract rats?
  2. Are there any humane traps that you recommend?
  3. How can I ensure my home is safe from future infestations?
  4. Any DIY methods that you’ve found effective?

Looking forward to hearing your experiences and tips!

Hey @UrbanExplorer92! First off, sorry to hear about your rat issue. I’ve dealt with similar problems in the past. For bait, peanut butter mixed with some oats works wonders. They can’t resist it!

Totally agree! I’ve had success using sunflower seeds too. They love those and it’s less messy than some other baits.

I’m a big fan of humane traps! I use a brand called “Catch & Release”. They’re great because you can capture the rat and then release it far away from your house. Just make sure you check them frequently to avoid stress.

Yes, I also recommend checking them often! You wouldn’t want them stuck in there for too long. What about baiting the humane traps?

In terms of safety, sealing any potential entry points is crucial. I went around my home and filled in gaps with steel wool and caulk. Rats can squeeze through surprisingly small holes!

That’s a great point, @SafetyFirstSam! I’ll definitely be doing an inspection. Any tips on products I should use for that?

For DIY methods, I once used a mix of cinnamon and peppermint oil around the areas where I suspected they were hiding. The scent seems to drive them away!

I’ve heard that works! Also, don’t forget to keep food stored in airtight containers. It minimizes the attraction.

To add to the discussion on traps, I’ve had some luck with homemade ones too! I made a simple bucket trap that uses a ramp and bait at the top. It’s effective if the rats are curious enough.

That sounds innovative, @CleverCatcher! Just make sure it’s safe and doesn’t harm them if they fall.

Thanks for all the tips, everyone! I’m feeling more equipped to deal with this rat situation. I’ll report back on what works for me!

Ugh, rats are such a pain! For bait, I’ve had great luck with chocolate spread. It’s sticky, so they can’t just grab it and run. Anyone else tried this?

@CityGardener Chocolate spread is a good one! I’ve also used bits of bacon grease, and the rats go nuts for it. Just make sure to secure it well in the trap.

I second sealing entry points! I used expanding foam for larger gaps and steel wool for smaller ones. Also, check your vents—rats can sneak through those too.

@UrbanTrapper Totally agree on vents! I added mesh screens to mine. For bait, I’ve used dried fruit like raisins. It’s cheap and works surprisingly well.

Has anyone tried ultrasonic repellents? I’ve heard mixed reviews, but I’m curious if they actually keep rats away or just annoy them.

For a DIY trap, I made a ramp trap with a bucket and a piece of wood smeared with peanut butter. Caught two rats in one night! Just make sure the bucket is deep enough.

@DIYDenny That bucket trap sounds awesome! Did you line it with anything to make it comfy for the rats before release? I’m worried about them getting stressed.

Peppermint oil is my go-to for keeping rats away. I soak cotton balls in it and place them near entry points. It’s non-toxic and smells great to us, but rats hate it!
