Just caught a rat in a live trap in my basement. How far away should I release this little guy to make sure he doesn’t come back?
It’s important to release them in a wild area, far from other homes. I usually go for 5 miles or more, just to be sure they don’t return.
Wow, 5 miles seems like a lot! I was thinking a walk to the local park would suffice. It’s about a mile away.
Well…I usually release them about a kilometer away, preferably in a wooded area. I’m worried they’ll come back…
Unfortunately, a mile isn’t enough for rats. They have an excellent sense of direction and can find their way back easily. The further, the better!

Remember to release the rat into an environment where it can survive. Dropping it off in unfamiliar territory could be harmful to its chances of survival.
YES!! I don’t want someone else releasing their rat near my place. Make sure you take it somewhere secluded.
That’s why choosing the release area is key. I aim for dense woodlands or areas away from residential zones.
To keep the balance of the local ecosystem, I suggest consulting a wildlife expert or doing a bit of research before choosing a drop-off point.
