How do you keep raccoons out of your yard long-term?

Hey everyone,
I’ve been dealing with raccoons in my yard for months now, and nothing I try seems to keep them away for good. They keep knocking over trash cans, digging up parts of the lawn, and sometimes even getting onto the deck at night.

I’ve tried short-term fixes like lights and noise, but they always seem to come back after a while. I’m really looking for long-term, realistic solutions that actually work and don’t turn into a constant battle. What has worked for you?

For me, the biggest improvement came from locking down food sources. Secured trash cans made a huge difference.

Motion-activated lights helped at first, but the raccoons eventually got used to them.

I had luck with fencing, but it has to be solid and buried a bit or they’ll dig under it.

@BackyardBattler Raccoons are smart and persistent. If there’s food, they’ll keep coming back no matter what.

Raccoon-proof lids are worth every dollar. Once they can’t get food, they lose interest.

Repellents didn’t do much for me. They seemed to ignore sprays after a few days.

We sealed gaps under the deck and removed fallen fruit from trees. That combo helped a lot.

@GardenGuard Agree on the fencing. A shallow electric line near the bottom worked surprisingly well.

If they’ve already made a habit of your yard, expect it to take a few weeks of consistency.

There’s no single magic fix. Cutting off food + blocking access over time is what finally worked for us.
