How Do You Keep Raccoons Out of the Yard for Good?

Hey everyone,

I’m at my wits’ end with raccoons showing up in my yard every few nights. They dig around the garden, knock over bins, and generally act like they own the place. I’ve tried basic cleanup and keeping food sealed, but they keep coming back.

I used a mix of cleanup + locking down the trash bins. Once they realized food wasn’t easy to get, they stopped visiting as often. They’re smart, so you gotta remove anything rewarding.

A taller fence helped me, but only after I added a topper that tilts outward. They’re great climbers, so the angle makes a huge difference.

Motion sprinklers worked surprisingly well for me. They hate being startled and wet, so mine stopped coming around after a week or two.

If you grow veggies, protect the garden first. They love soft soil for digging. I put wire mesh under my raised beds and that stopped the burrowing.

I had luck with solar lights that flicker. Not sure if it scares them or just annoys them, but it kept them moving instead of hanging around.

@NorthFenceFred is right about the climbing. People underestimate how effortlessly they scale wood panels. Reinforcing the top edge made the biggest difference for me.

Sometimes they’re coming for water, not food. Fixing a slow-dripping hose and covering my small pond helped reduce visits way faster than I expected.

I’ve had raccoons ignore noise deterrents after a while. They get used to patterns. Changing the placement or timing of lights/sprinklers keeps them guessing.

If you’ve got an open crawl space, check that first. They love sheltered spots. I sealed mine up last spring, and the nightly visits dropped almost immediately.
