Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some humane ways to keep raccoons out of our yard. They’ve been digging around the lawn at night and tipping over trash cans, but I really don’t want to harm them. I’ve read mixed advice online, so I’m hoping to hear what’s actually worked for others.
Things I’m curious about:
-
Which deterrents are actually effective long-term?
-
Are motion-activated devices worth it?
-
What common mistakes might be attracting them in the first place?
Any advice would be appreciated!
First thing I’d check is food sources. We stopped leaving pet food outside and switched to locking trash cans, and that alone reduced visits a lot.
Motion-activated sprinklers worked surprisingly well for us. They don’t hurt the raccoons, just startle them enough to move on.
I tried repellents (granules and sprays), but they only worked for a few days. Rain washed them away fast. Physical deterrents seem more reliable.
Same here. Once we secured the compost bin and stopped feeding birds at night, the raccoons mostly disappeared.
@NatureLover88 Make sure there’s nothing easy for them to grab. Raccoons are smart, if the yard stops being “rewarding,” they usually give up.
Lighting helped in our case. Adding a few solar motion lights near the fence line made them less comfortable hanging around.
We planted strong-smelling plants like lavender and mint near the problem areas. Not a miracle cure, but it seemed to reduce digging.
One thing that didn’t work for me was ultrasonic devices. Maybe they help in some setups, but the raccoons in my area didn’t care at all.
@DIYDude56 Good point on trash cans. Using bungee cords on the lids was a cheap fix and way more effective than sprays.
Overall, a combo worked best for us: secure food, lights, and a sprinkler. No harm done, and after a few weeks the raccoons stopped coming back.
