House centipedes: when does it go from annoying to a real problem?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been seeing house centipedes every now and then, mostly in the basement and sometimes in the bathroom at night. I know they’re supposed to be harmless and even helpful since they eat other bugs, but honestly… they freak me out.

Right now it’s just one here and there, but I’m starting to wonder at what point it becomes an actual problem instead of just an occasional nuisance. Does seeing them mean there’s a bigger pest issue going on?

For those who’ve dealt with this before, when did you decide to take action, and what actually worked?

Seeing one occasionally isn’t usually a big deal, but frequent sightings can mean something else is going on.

They usually show up where there are other bugs to eat.

If you’re seeing them often, it’s more about what they’re feeding on.

@GarageFox82 Exactly. They’re basically a sign of another pest problem.

Basements and bathrooms make sense since they like moisture.

I started taking action when I saw them almost every night.

Reducing humidity helped a lot in my basement.

@DIYDude56 Same here. Once it became frequent, I knew something was off.

Dehumidifiers and general pest control made a big difference for me.

If you deal with the root cause, the centipedes usually disappear too.
