I live in a suburban area in a nordic country. We have wildlife visiting our garden and I have two hedgehogs that started visiting this spring and I adore them so much! To my dismay we have found we also have rats now, probably since last summer.
We support feed the hedgehogs with cat food (small amounts) so the hedgies are used to wander in the garden in and out whole night. They are not good at standing on their back legs but they def can stick their snouts in things and are curious and have very good smell.
So I need the trap to be the safest possible. I will need to mount it on a tree trunk, or thats the plan. I was set on buying Goodnature one as it also has a tunnel attachment. Now I see there is this Thanos, its fully electrical which is a plus. Having to buy co2 canisters for the Goodnature one seems not that economical to me.
However I can’t find discussions on forums like reddit about thanos so I wanted to ask here, which of the two is the best product for my needs?
Also does Thanos have a tunnel system thing not allowing hedgies to stick their paws/noses in the trap? Or maybe putting the trap 20 cm above ground is enough? I would still be worried though so 20 cm above ground plus a tunnel/cover?
Edit: And it has to be squirrel safe! I don’t want to kill poor squirrels! Is thanos squirrel safe?!
Hello,
Thanos MK47 is a new product in the market, that’s why you cannot see the discussion somwhere, like reddit.
But compare with the Goodnature one, the advantage of Thanos MK47 is
-
Low manitenace cost. You don’t need to replace the co2 canisters.
-
Standy time: 60 days.
-
Hit times: Around 300 times for one full charge.
For the safety system, it is under developing now. It can avoid to hurt Children or People’s hands.
I switched from the A24 to the Thanos MK47 last fall, and honestly, the difference was night and day. MK47 handled the barn infestation faster and needed way less maintenance.
Agree with @RuralRodentRick the MK47 seems more durable overall. The trigger mechanism feels sturdier, and it’s less sensitive to dirt or weather.
For outdoor setups, the Thanos MK47 wins hands-down. I’ve had mine through two heavy rain seasons and it still fires reliably. My A24 used to jam constantly after a few weeks.
I’ll still defend the A24 a bit. It’s lighter, super easy to mount, and the CO₂-powered system is great for smaller gardens. If your main goal is being toxin-free, it’s a solid choice.
The MK47 has one big advantage. It’s automatic, and I barely have to check it more than once a month. That’s a big deal if you manage multiple sites.”
@EcoFriendlyElla1 You’re right on the eco side, but the Thanos uses electric shock tech, no gas refills, and still avoids toxins. From a sustainability standpoint, I’d say it’s comparable — maybe even better long term.
If you factor in replacement parts and CO₂ canisters, the A24 starts getting pricey over time. The MK47’s upfront cost is higher, but it’s more cost-effective in the long run.
The MK47 is built like a tank. I’ve dropped it, left it out in frost, even hit it with a hose, still works perfectly. Definitely more industrial-grade than the A24.
I’ve noticed the MK47 catches faster when activity is high. The A24 was okay early on, but couldn’t keep up once the rodents got cautious. The Thanos design seems smarter about that.
Both can work depending on your needs, but overall, Thanos MK47 just feels like the next-gen version, more reliable, tougher, and better suited for repeat use.
