Hey everyone,
My kitchen has basically turned into a five-star resort for fruit flies and I’m losing it. I clean the counters, take out the trash, scrub the sink—five minutes later, they’re right back like they pay rent. I’ve tried vinegar traps, lemon in the garbage disposal, even covered every bit of fruit like it’s on witness protection… nothing seems to fully fix it.
Before I throw my whole kitchen away, I’m hoping to hear from folks who’ve survived a fruit-fly takeover:
-
What actually works long-term?
-
Are store-bought traps worth it?
-
Is there a hidden source I might be missing?
-
Any weird tricks that surprisingly helped?
Appreciate any advice before I lose the last bit of sanity I have left.
Been there! My whole issue ended up being old onions at the bottom of a grocery bag in a cabinet. Didn’t notice them until they were basically liquid. Once I tossed that mess, the flies vanished in a day.
Honestly, the vinegar + dish soap trap works really well, but you gotta refresh it every day. If it stops working, it means the liquid is full and the flies are basically partying on top of it instead of falling in.
Don’t forget the sink drain. I poured boiling water + baking soda in mine for two days straight and that finally killed whatever nest they apparently had in there.
@HomeFixerMike Totally agree with you. And OP, check your potatoes. Seriously. If even one potato starts going soft at the bottom of the bag, it turns into a fruit fly version of Disneyland.
Store-bought traps work but get the gel-type ones, not the sticky paper. The sticky ones just make you feel like you’re living inside a fly graveyard.
@FruitFliesGoneMad If your cleaning is solid, look at your recycling bin. I once had fruit flies breeding inside a soda can I thought was “empty.” Nope. They were thriving.
Vacuum them. No joke. When they swarm near the sink, I use the handheld vacuum and zap like 20 in one go. Super satisfying.
If you’ve got houseplants nearby, check the soil. Sometimes it’s not fruit flies, it’s fungus gnats pretending to be fruit flies. Totally different nightmare.
Wipe down your spice bottles. Sticky syrup around the cap of honey, soy sauce, maple syrup—fruit flies LOVE that stuff.
I’ll second what @PantryDetective said, root vegetables hide evil. Also, once you get rid of the main source, keep traps out for a few days because you’ll still have stragglers. Mine disappeared around day four.
