Hey everyone,
I’m hoping someone here has been through this before. For the past week, I’ve been waking up with itchy red bites on my ankles and legs that really look like flea bites. The confusing part is I haven’t actually seen a single flea anywhere — not on the bed, not on the floor, not even on my pet.
This happened to me last year. Fleas can hide really well in carpets, cracks, or even the mattress seams. Seeing bites before seeing fleas isn’t that uncommon.
I thought I had fleas once, turned out to be bed bugs. Not saying that’s your case, but it’s worth checking the bite pattern and mattress edges closely.
Do you have pets? Even indoor ones can carry fleas briefly. You might not see them, but they can still bite humans before settling somewhere else.
Fleas also tend to jump off after biting, so catching them in the act is tough. White socks and walking around carpeted areas helped me confirm they were there.
@SkepticalSue I’d still wash all bedding on hot and vacuum thoroughly. Even if it’s not fleas, that step rules out a lot of possibilities.
Another possibility is mites. Some people react strongly to them, and they’re basically invisible without magnification.
I didn’t see fleas until weeks later. Once I treated the room and the pet at the same time, the bites finally stopped.
Check under the bed and along baseboards. That’s where I eventually found evidence. Fleas love dark, undisturbed spots.
@CozyCorner Good point about bed bugs. Flea bites usually cluster around ankles, while bed bugs tend to show up in lines or groups on exposed skin.
If the bites keep appearing, I’d treat it as fleas anyway. Waiting for visual proof just made my situation worse.
