Finding Black Beetles in My House Every Day… What Are These Things?

Hey everyone,

I’m hoping someone here can help me stay sane. For the past two weeks, I’ve been finding these small black beetle-looking bugs in my house almost every single day. Sometimes on the floor, sometimes on the window sill, and once even in the bathtub.

I’ve tried searching online, but everything looks the same — carpet beetles, ground beetles, pantry beetles… it’s all starting to blur together. I don’t know if these things are actually dangerous, if they bite, or if they’re just annoying visitors.

Before I call in a pro, I’d love to hear if anyone has dealt with beetles like this and figured out where they’re coming from or how to slow them down.

Check around door frames and basement windows. Ground beetles sneak in through the tiniest gaps when the weather shifts.

If they’re shiny and move fast, they’re probably ground beetles. If they’re slow and kinda dusty-looking, could be carpet beetles.

I had the same issue last fall. Turned out they were coming in because of the porch light attracting them at night.

Carpet beetles usually show up near fabric or rugs. If you’re seeing them in the bathroom, maybe not them.

Can you check behind baseboards? Sometimes beetles squeeze through spots you wouldn’t expect.

@BugIDNerd That’s a super helpful distinction. I had no idea the speed actually meant something.

If any of them have little oval shells with tiny patterns, they are carpet beetles. Look in closets and storage bins.

@CrawlspaceCurious Also look at air vents. I once had a dozen beetles drop into a room because they were nesting in the attic insulation.

Ground beetles wander in by accident, they don’t infest or breed indoors. If that’s what they are, sealing entry points might be enough.

I’d start by vacuuming and checking window screens. Easy fixes sometimes make a bigger difference than you’d think.
